Whether you’re a casual birder or an avid one, Sierra Vista is the place to be. This is especially true in the late summer, as Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Summer Festival takes place right here in our special city. Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival is the oldest birding festival in Arizona, beginning in 1991. Every year they hold a Spring Fling in May, where guided field trips are offered in and around Sierra Vista to birding hot spots.
Following the Spring Fling is the Summer Festival, held late July/early August, and not only includes field trips but educational programs given by wildlife experts, incredible exhibits to view, vendors, and a keynote buffet. This year’s Summer Festival takes place July 31st-August 3rd, and has a variety of field trips including ones that take place over three days and others that are day trips in and around Cochise County. You can find out more information for these field trips by going to the Southwest Wings website.

August 1st of the festival brings you to the Keynote Dinner, hosted at the Pueblo del Sol Country Club. The speaker for the dinner will be Julie Zickefoose, a distinguished ornithologist, artist, and author. Limited seating is available for the dinner and registration closes July 22nd. The entirety of the Summer Festival is a spectacular, one-of-a-kind event that you don’t want to miss. If you do happen to miss it, no worries, the Southwest Wings Spring Fling is practically around the corner…
